Travel to: Linville Gorge 05/28/2010
Didn't have time to make a post yesterday... I was at Wal-Mart buying trail mix, Bud Light, wieners, and a poncho. Memorial Day Weekend is finally here, and a camping we will go. I'm headed out to the Blue Ridge Mountains to pitch a tent in Linville Gorge. The weather's looking a little bi-polar, so rain gear is my new best friend (I can't be having the bears and chipmunks seeing me with frizzy hair).

Clever promotion from KLM. They hired Ramana, a famous Dutch illusionist, to levitate in the Manchester airport. The stunt advertises their new "comfort" section aboard planes. Learn more here. Travel to: Alexander Valley (Healdsburg, CA) 05/19/2010
My two new favorite foods = Fig & Olive Spread and Spicy Bread & Butter Pickles. I discovered these delectable delights, last weekend, at the Jimtown Store in Healdsburg, Ca. It's a quaint general store /gourmet sandwich shop in the midst of Sonoma County's beautiful vineyards. Like something out of the Andy Griffith Show, it's a nice respite from the hustle of San Francisco. Every sandwich on the menu features simple, yet rich ingredients. I chose the Jimtown Sandwich, of course, which consists of prosciutto, blue cheese, and the infamous Jimtown Fig & Olive Spread. It was served with spicy bread and butter pickles and a glass of white wine. I wound up buying an entire container of the pickles and ate the flaming fermented cucumbers in two sittings. In fact, in the middle of writing this blog, I went to Amazon and bought the Jimtown Cookbook.
(Recipe for Fig and Olive Spread after the jump!) I Made: A Bay to Breakers T-Shirt 05/18/2010
Only in San Francisco do people run a 12k TOTALLY NAKED! Perhaps you're conjuring images Playboy Models and Chippendale Dancers running all Bay Watch style... so did I, the first time I ran Bay to Breakers in 2004... but alas the old adage rings true, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." The naked people in this case are mostly people you wouldn't want to see flopping their ding-dongs, ta-ta's and hoo-ha's in the wind. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's certainly a spectacle. Amongst all the elaborately costumed runners (airbrushed Avatars, connected centipedes of people, floats with Vikings, Elvis impersonators, salmon who run from the finish line to the start), it's always the "au natural" participants that garner the most attention. So this year, I decided to design a t-shirt to celebrate the 7.45 mile streakers. It just advertises what's on everyone's mind: I just came to see the naked people. Within 5 minutes we had a fan of the shirts. Here's me getting a dose of what I came for... ewww ewww ewww.... More nudity after the jump!

Event: Not Made In China @ THE BIG CRAFTY 05/12/2010
Not Made In China is venturing out to the land of hairy pits, bearded men and patchoulie perfumes. I'm happy to announce yet another fabulous event to add to your calendars. It's called The Big Crafty and there's no beating around the bush with a name like that. Touted as Asheville's biggest, and best, indie craft show, it's sure to have something for everyone. Fill up your gas tanks, and make a day of it... Sunday, July 11th. What they say... Voted Asheville's favorite art/craft fair, The Big Crafty returns this July with a lively celebration of handmade commerce. Reviving the tradition of the community bazaar, there will be fine indie art and craft, music, activities, and locally handcrafted beer and food. Big Crafty artists, crafters and makers are chosen on the basis of their inventiveness and creativity. Their work (ranging from painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, jewelry, sculpture, glass, wood, fiber-arts, and metalwork to the downright uncategorizable) makes The Big Crafty a rich pageant of backyard and basement "outsider" art as well as juried prize-winners. | When life gives you hands, make handmade.
