AIGA Charlotte Celebrates the Revival of a Centuries Old Tradition
We're only ONE WEEK out from Letterpress Fest! Over the course of four days (Feb. 13-16), AIGA Charlotte is bringing together nationally renowned speakers to give lectures, participate in panel discussions and run hands-on workshops on an old-fashioned tradition that’s never gone out of style – the art of letterpress.

Though the workshops sold out in 5 minutes, a wide range of additional events are planned for Letterpress Fest, including:
  • Workshops and demonstrations by Kyle Durrie, the proprietor of Power and Light Press, and the owner/operator of the Moveable Type Truck from Portland, OR.
  • A lecture by Jim Sherraden, the manager, curator, and chief designer at Hatch Show Print in Nashville, TN.
  • The two co-founders of Ladies of Letterpress Jessica C. White and Kseniya Thomas, who are also owners of their own individual letterpress companies.
  • Local letterpress talent, featuring Beth Faragan of Crayton-Heritage Letterpress and Kelly Koeppel, owner of k2forma.
  • An exclusive screening of Proceed & Be Bold!, a documentary that covers the life and works of Amos Paul Kennedy Jr., an African American letterpress poster designer.
All events will be held at the Chop Shop in Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood. AIGA members can purchase a pass for $20 to attend all of the week’s events (excluding the workshops), while non-members can purchase the pass for $40. Attendees also have the option of paying for individual events. For a full schedule of Letterpress Fest and to register, click here.

Not Made in China will be peddling wares at the first ever Queen City Brewers Festival. Come imbibe with us!

via qcbrewfest.com:
The Queen City Brewers Festival is on Tap. Premiering at the Neighborhood Theatre (511 E. 36th Street, Charlotte, NC, 28205), on Saturday, February 4, 2012, QCBF is exclusive to the Charlotte-area breweries that are putting the Queen City on the craft beer map. The event will feature a diverse selection of beer styles and flavors to taste and learn about from official brewery representatives.

With Charlotte’s craft beer market exploding in recent years, the goal of this event is to spotlight the city’s emerging craft breweries while bringing awareness to the event’s nonprofit host, Partners for Parks, a  nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation that seeks to promote and enhance parks, recreation and open space in neighborhoods throughout Mecklenburg County and the surrounding area.

So I've been a little under the radar this week... that's because Wedding Day Hooray is this weekend in Atlanta! I've been a mad woman prepping for this thing and have had no time to blog. Eeek! I did manage to snag a few pics of the dress rehearsal in my kitchen.

Over the past few weeks, when I mention that I'm participating in a wedding show, I get some blank stares and questions like, "Wait, like what kinds of things would Not Made in China do for weddings?"

Well, wonder no more. We've got you covered from the engagement to the altar. Start with a magnetic 2.25" save the date, followed up with an unique invitation littered with a few custom 1.25" buttons, get swagged up at your bachelor/bachelorette party with clever buttons to wear out on the town, use buttons at your reception as placecards with buttons that say: "Bridesmaid" or "I just came for the open bar" or "If found please return to room 109," and send guests home with a commemorative mirror or bottle opener, in a stamped muslin bag, as a nice little "thank you."

More to come after the weekend. Plus, a recap of Wedding Day Hooray!

Still coming down off the Charlotte Magazine high. Lots of great stuff happening around here. We're in the process of fulfilling a sizable order for the STUPENDOUS gift shop, Green with ENVY, located in Plaza Midwood. Event: 02/04/11 Waking Sleeping Beauty Screening at UNCC 02/01/2011

Waking Sleeping Beauty is a fascinating documentary about the Disney employees who saved the dynasty from near disaster. Join me, and the fabulous designers of AIGA Charlotte and UNCC, for a look at the artists, creators, animators and storytellers who turned the company around and churned-out our favorite childhood animated films (Little Mermaid anyone!?.... I've got gadget and gizmos of plenty.... I've got whozits and whatzits galore... you want thing-a-ma-bobs? I've got plenty....).

AIGA Charlotte and UNCC's AIGA Student Chapter presents, in collaboration with Charlotte Underground Film Festival, a screening of Waking Sleeping Beauty!

(Courtesy of The Walt Disney Company via Facebook)
By the mid-1980s, the fabled animation studios of Walt Disney had fallen on hard times. The artists were polarized between newcomers hungry to innovate and old timers not yet ready to relinquish control. These conditions produced a series of box-office flops and pessimistic forecasts: maybe the best days of animation were over. Maybe the public didn't care. Only a miracle or a magic spell could produce a happy ending.

Waking Sleeping Beauty is no fairy tale. It's the true story of how Disney regained its magic with a staggering output of hits - "Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast ," "Aladdin," "The Lion King," and more - over a 10-year period.

Join us as we follow Tim Burton, John Lasseter, Ron Clements, John Musker, Michael Eisner, Roger Allers, Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise, Roy E. Disney, and many others on their magical journey of Waking Sleeping Beauty! www.wakingsleepingbeautymovie.com
