AirBNB Accommodation in SF
The apt I found on AirBnB... cute right?!
I'm a budget traveler who takes pride in blending in with my surroundings. In a little over a week I'm headed to San Francisco (for the 2nd time this year... I left my heart there). I wanted to save some moola by cooking some meals at home, and pretend I'm a San Franciscan by inhabiting an apartment in a hip, central neighborhood. I checked the vacation rentals section on Craigslist, and inquired about some rentals on VRBO.com. I was less than impressed with the lack of affordable and promising accommodations. Then I found AirBnB.com.

Since I'm headed to Chattanooga, thought I'd throw in some vintage pics of a choo choo. The Incline Railway leads to the top of Lookout Mountain and provides a great aerial view of the Chattanooga Valley. Known as the world's steepest passenger railway, it has been operating since 1895!

Didn't have time to make a post yesterday... I was at Wal-Mart buying trail mix, Bud Light, wieners, and a poncho. Memorial Day Weekend is finally here, and a camping we will go. I'm headed out to the Blue Ridge Mountains to pitch a tent in Linville Gorge. The weather's looking a little bi-polar, so rain gear is my new best friend (I can't be having the bears and chipmunks seeing me with frizzy hair).

My two new favorite foods = Fig & Olive Spread and Spicy Bread & Butter Pickles. I discovered these delectable delights, last weekend, at the Jimtown Store in Healdsburg, Ca. It's a quaint general store /gourmet sandwich shop in the midst of Sonoma County's beautiful vineyards. Like something out of the Andy Griffith Show, it's a nice respite from the hustle of San Francisco.

Every sandwich on the menu features simple, yet rich ingredients. I chose the Jimtown Sandwich, of course, which consists of prosciutto, blue cheese, and the infamous Jimtown Fig & Olive Spread. It was served with spicy bread and butter pickles and a glass of white wine. I wound up buying an entire container of the pickles and ate the flaming fermented cucumbers in two sittings. In fact, in the middle of writing this blog, I went to Amazon and bought the Jimtown Cookbook

In honor of my road trip to Lou-a-vul, Kentucky, I decided to scour Flickr
for some photos of Hunter S. Thompson's ol' stomping grounds.

Did you know that Louisville produces one-third of all
bourbon whiskey in the United States?!

What brings me to Louisville? It's not the Derby, nor KFC headquarters,
it's the Palace Theater (for a Phoenix concert).

I'm going home today! In honor of my trip, I decided to post some pics of my birthplace, Oceanside, Ca. I found some fun photos of a few neon signs on flickr. Most near and dear to my heart are the "Surf Bowl" and the "101 Cafe."

The Surf Bowl (aka Welcome Lanes... back in the day) is where I spent many a Wednesday night doing homework. Say wha? Well, you see, my parents were on a bowling league. So each hump-day, we'd venture out to the smoke ridden home of America's favorite past time. Nachos for dinner and arcade games for babysitters. The cardinal rule: no Pac-Man, air hockey, or claw-grabber-prize-thingy until homework was complete. What I wouldn't do for a quarter.

The 101 Cafe is where I spent many a Sat/Sun morning in high school. It was my first real job: Busgirl Extraordinaire. Milkshakes, coffee refills, damp washcloths, and butter scooped with a melon baller were my livelihood. Working in the service industry is an education I sure don't take for granted. I learned a lot about life from career waitresses, old-timer regulars and diner culture in general.
