The Surf Bowl (aka Welcome Lanes... back in the day) is where I spent many a Wednesday night doing homework. Say wha? Well, you see, my parents were on a bowling league. So each hump-day, we'd venture out to the smoke ridden home of America's favorite past time. Nachos for dinner and arcade games for babysitters. The cardinal rule: no Pac-Man, air hockey, or claw-grabber-prize-thingy until homework was complete. What I wouldn't do for a quarter.
The 101 Cafe is where I spent many a Sat/Sun morning in high school. It was my first real job: Busgirl Extraordinaire. Milkshakes, coffee refills, damp washcloths, and butter scooped with a melon baller were my livelihood. Working in the service industry is an education I sure don't take for granted. I learned a lot about life from career waitresses, old-timer regulars and diner culture in general.
